Head Machine – Orgasm (1970)

    Before playing with Cliff Bennet’s band Toe Fat, Ken Hensley and Lee Kerslake (later together again in Uriah Heep) found time to record an album for a specific project called Head Machine, although it was supposed to be released as The Gods’ third album. The title of the album was “Orgasm”. The producer of the album was David Paramor, who also produced The Gods’ albums.
    The music is good, but not outstanding, and the style is something between The Gods and Toe Fat. Ken describes this project as a “mercenary” one, which means that they were involved only for the money, professionally speaking. He states that it wasn’t really his band, and there are some doubts about the songwriting credits, since on the album it’s written that Paramor composed all the songs, but there’s deffinitely a “Ken Hensley touch” on them. It is one of the heaviest records that Hensley has ever been involved.
    As a curiosity, one song from this album, “You Tried To Take It All”, was later recorded with a different name on Toe Fat’s first album, and credited to Cliff Bennet !!
    This album is now a rare collectors’ item, not least because it appears to have been recorded by The Gods under pseudonym. Musically it veers towards heavy rock with most tracks being pretty heavy with driving guitar work. The title cut and Climax are the pick of the bunch, whilst Make The Feeling Last and The Girl Who Loved, The Girl Who Loved are softer and subtler numbers. Lyrically (if it isn’t obvious from the titles) the album basically deals with sex…

    Overall, a good example of the heavier rock genre which was quite prevalent in the late sixties / early seventies. Two tracks, I Can’t Believe and You Tried to Take it All were later re-recorded for Toe Fat’s debut album.

    The French release is the one with the shell. The UK release has a black cover with white circles in the middle (like a shooting target). The UK release also has some weird drawings on the back.

    Also there are two CD reissues. One from German TRC which depicts the French sleeve. Avoid this one by all means. They mastered it from a bad vinyl copy, even the remastered version is horrible. The other release is from UK Audio Archives which has the UK sleeve. It is also mastered from an LP but is much better.

    Head Machine:
    Ken Leslie (Ken Hensley) – organ, piano, guitar, lead vocals;
    John Leadhen (John Glasscock) – bass guitar, vocals;
    Brian & Lee Poole (Brian Glasscock & Lee Kerslake) – drums;
    Mike Road – percussion;
    David Paramor – backing vocals.
